Post Water proof cameras & video devices
on: January 12, 2012, 12:04

I would like to find out more about what other bodysurfers are using out there when it comes to photos and filming in the water.I purchased a Nikon AW100 waterproof camera just before Christmas and i read up on it and did my homework and trialled it as you can see by the photos on the City Beach Break site it worked very well.I was amazed how good it worked in the water, that was Christmas eve.Christmas day in the water again the camera worked for a short time then the screen went blank and after washing and drying, the compartment that houses the battery and memory card had water in it not alot but enough.Since then over the Christmas break nothing could be done until the repairers returned, since then it has been sent back to Nikon to be assesed as i know that the waterproof compartment door was securely closed but still water managed to get in.18 days later i am still waiting for a response!
This camera can work as advertised in a depth to 33foot 10 metres, i was on the surface.
Another one of the City Beach crew had an Olympus waterproof camera and that failed him and he was blamed for not sealing it up before entering the water.
I will keep you informed as events happen.

:( To hear you have a problem, in general I have experienced many faulty new products lately(what happened to quality :x ).

I don't have any water proof camera yet, but I am keen to see what happens with customer service, this many influence me and other prospective buyers. It may be worth mentioning you are a member of the Australian Bodysurfing community at bodysurfers.info and have posted up your experince so far. Time and effective communication for customer service issues is very important.

Paul,
There was a failure, however we are unable to determine the cause of that failure, we have given you a brand new camera.
Re the front cover, true, however it means that more care needs to be taken when cleaning the battery compartment door. It only takes one grain of sand to compromise the integrity.
Your camera has a 12 month warranty and 6 month on repairs. It is unlikely, but not impossible that you will experience another failure. Electronic equipment is like that, although failure rates of Nikon are very low.
No guarantees unfortunately.
WE WILL SEE WHAT HAPPENS!!!

Greg
So far replacement New Camera working well.I spend some time washing it before opening the water tight door, and wash under the shower the minute i leave the water at the beach then wash again in a bucket of water and use a nail brush to clean the mechanisim that locks the door at home. That sand can really make the difference i even try and swim clear of the dirty water and hold the camera out of the water as much as possible.

The camera is excellent i have taken slow motion film and filmed underwater as the bodysurfer goes past in the wave, as well as view from all the other angles groyne, beach and i wish i could get up into the viewing tower on the end of the groyne where the surf life savers keep an eye out on the swimmers so i could look down on the bodysurfers.
