Break Information
City Beach is a predominantly a left hand break which is a late spring summer into autumn wave, the summer months are a lot calmer but we do get a regular South Wester called the FREO DR which moves tons of sand by Long shore drift around the groyne which banks up forming the left break this sand can fluctuate in depth and area depending on the amount being washed around!
The whole cycle of sand is wind blown from the southerly beaches of Cottesloe/Swanbourne and wave movement and the groyne anchors it. There are no rock walls or groynes south of us apart from Cottesloe groyne then past that you are looking at the moles of Fremantle protecting the harbour.
During the winter months the south side of the city Beach groyne are where the waves are rideable as the north side becomes to dumpy no waves breaking on rideable banks.
Like most beaches they are a dynamic force that can change in such a short period of time.
Thank you to Dave Ross & Paul Thompson for providing the images and data.
